I’m Sally, the part of your A1C app that watches your blood sugar and connects it to the rest of your day. Here is what I want you to know about a normal blood sugar level, in plain words.

What blood sugar actually is

Blood sugar is the amount of glucose, a simple sugar, floating in your blood at any moment. Glucose is your body’s main fuel. It comes from the food you eat, mostly from carbohydrates like rice, bread, noodles, fruit, and anything sweet. Your gut breaks those foods down into glucose, your blood carries it, and a hormone called insulin lets your cells take it in and use it for energy.

Your blood sugar is never a flat line. It rises after you eat, falls as your cells use the fuel, and settles back down between meals. That rise and fall is normal and healthy. What matters is the size of the swings and where your number sits when you have not eaten for a while.

The number is reported in milligrams per deciliter, written “mg/dL.” In some countries it is reported in millimoles per liter, written “mmol/L.” A1C shows you mg/dL, so that is what I will use here.

The normal range, and where the lines are

The single most useful number is your fasting blood sugar. That is your level first thing in the morning, before you have eaten or had anything but water for at least eight hours. It is the cleanest read on how your body handles glucose, because nothing you ate that day is pushing it around yet.

For an adult without diabetes, a normal fasting blood sugar is 70 to 99 mg/dL. Above that, the lines are drawn like this.

These cutoffs come from the American Diabetes Association’s Standards of Care, the reference most doctors use. A few things are worth knowing about them.

The fasting number and the after-meal number tell different stories. Fasting glucose is your baseline, the level your body holds when it is at rest. The two-hour-after-a-meal number shows how well your body clears a load of food. You can have a normal fasting number and still spike high after lunch, which is why a single morning reading does not tell the whole story.

A1C is the three-month view. It estimates your average blood sugar over the past 8 to 12 weeks by measuring how much glucose has attached to your red blood cells. It does not move day to day, so it is the number a doctor uses to confirm a diagnosis, not to track a single morning.

Prediabetes is not a small thing, and it is not a verdict. A fasting number between 100 and 125 means your body has started to lose some of its ability to handle sugar smoothly. It is also the stage where small changes do the most good, because the system is strained but not broken.

What changes your blood sugar

I think of blood sugar as the most responsive signal you have. It answers to almost everything you do, often within minutes. That is what makes it useful, and it is also why a single reading can mislead you if you read it alone.

Things I see push blood sugar up, at least for a while:

  • A meal heavy in fast carbohydrates. White rice, sweet drinks, and pastries raise glucose faster and higher than the same calories from protein, fat, and fiber.
  • Eating quickly, or eating carbohydrates first. The same plate eaten faster, or starting with the rice instead of the vegetables and protein, often produces a bigger spike.
  • A short or broken night of sleep. One poor night can leave your morning fasting number 5 to 15 mg/dL higher than usual, even before you eat.
  • Stress. Stress hormones tell your liver to release stored glucose, so a hard meeting can raise your blood sugar with no food involved at all.
  • Being sick, even mildly. Your fasting number often rises a day or two before you feel symptoms.
  • The dawn effect. Your body releases hormones in the early morning to wake you up, and they can nudge your fasting number up before you have eaten a thing. This is normal.

Things I see steady blood sugar over time:

  • Meals built on protein, vegetables, and fiber, with the carbohydrate as a side rather than the centerpiece.
  • A short walk after eating. Ten to fifteen minutes of light movement after a meal can noticeably flatten the spike, because your working muscles pull glucose out of your blood.
  • Consistent sleep, in a cool room.
  • Regular aerobic exercise across the week, which makes your cells more responsive to insulin so the same meal moves your blood sugar less.
  • Eating earlier in the evening. A late, heavy dinner keeps your blood sugar higher overnight and raises your fasting number the next morning.

A note on what does not change with one good or bad day. Your A1C, the three-month average, moves slowly. One indulgent weekend will not break it, and one disciplined Monday will not fix it. The pattern over weeks is the story.

How I want you to read your own number

Three rules.

Read the trend, not the single number. One high reading after a birthday dinner means almost nothing. A fasting number that has drifted upward across two weeks is the signal worth reading. A morning of 105 after a late, heavy meal and four hours of sleep is a different thing from a morning of 105 after a normal week.

Pair the number with what is around it. Did you sleep badly? Eat late? Have a stressful day? Are you fighting a cold? Blood sugar alone is a number. Blood sugar plus context is something you can act on.

Watch your spikes, not just your fasting line. If you wear a sensor, the more useful habit is noticing which meals send your blood sugar high and how long it stays there. Two people can eat the same nasi goreng and see very different curves. Yours is the one that matters.

A first habit I would suggest: check your fasting number three mornings in a row before you read anything into it. That gives you a baseline. From there, a number that sits a little higher than your normal for several days in a row is worth noticing, and a fasting number that crosses 100 and stays there is worth a conversation with your doctor.

A small note on what blood sugar cannot tell you. A single high reading is not a diagnosis. Diabetes and prediabetes are confirmed by a doctor, usually with more than one test on more than one day. What your daily numbers give you is something different and just as valuable: a live view of how your body responds to your food, your sleep, and your week, while there is still plenty of time to act.

A real example I watched

A marketing director in her early forties had a fasting blood sugar that sat comfortably between 88 and 94 most mornings. For one week in May, her fasting number climbed to 101, then 104, then 103. Her diet had not really changed. She was not sick.

What had changed: a campaign deadline that pushed her dinners past 9 p.m. four nights that week, a switch from her usual evening tea to a sweet iced kopi susu to stay awake, and three nights of five hours of sleep in a warm bedroom because the AC had been turned down.

No single thing moved her fasting number. The stack did. The late dinners kept her blood sugar elevated overnight, the sugary evening drink added to it, and the short sleep made her body handle glucose less smoothly the next morning. When she finished dinner earlier on most nights, moved the sweet drink to the morning, and got two solid nights of sleep, her fasting number was back to 91 inside a week.

That is the real story your blood sugar tells. Not “you are unhealthy.” Just: your body is carrying a little more load right now, and here is exactly where it is coming from.

What I see that your reading cannot

A single number shows you where your blood sugar is. I see the system around it.

I notice that your fasting number started creeping up two days before your sleep got short, which means the late dinners started it and the short nights made it worse. I notice that the lunches you eat with vegetables first run a spike that is lower and shorter than the lunches where you start with the rice, even when the meal is otherwise the same. I notice that on the mornings after an early dinner, your fasting number sits 6 to 8 points lower, and I will tell you which evenings are worth repeating.

I will not lecture you about a number. I will show you what I see, and I will give you one thing to try today.

This is the part most apps and most lab reports miss. A blood sugar reading is one signal. Your sleep, your meals, the order you eat them in, your stress, and your week are the other signals telling the same story. I read them as one.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal fasting blood sugar? For an adult without diabetes, 70 to 99 mg/dL after at least eight hours without food. From 100 to 125 mg/dL is prediabetes, and 126 mg/dL or higher on more than one test points to diabetes.

What is a normal blood sugar after eating? Below 140 mg/dL two hours after a meal is considered normal. Between 140 and 199 is the prediabetes range, and 200 or higher points to diabetes. A brief, higher spike right after eating can still be normal. It is where your blood sugar lands two hours later that matters.

Is a blood sugar of 100 bad? A fasting reading of 100 is just over the normal line and sits at the start of the prediabetes range. One reading is not a diagnosis. If your fasting number sits at or above 100 across several mornings, it is worth mentioning to your doctor. It is also the stage where earlier dinners, better sleep, and post-meal walks do the most good.

Why is my morning blood sugar higher than when I went to bed? Most often the dawn effect. In the early morning your body releases hormones to help you wake up, and they nudge your blood sugar up before you eat. A late or heavy dinner the night before adds to it. A higher morning number on its own is usually not a concern. A morning number that keeps climbing across days is worth watching.

Do I need a continuous glucose monitor to know my levels? No. A standard fasting test at a lab, or a finger-prick meter, tells you your fasting number and your A1C. A continuous sensor adds something different: it shows you the spikes and dips through the whole day, so you can see which meals and habits move your blood sugar and by how much.

How often should I check? If you are simply curious and have no diagnosis, a yearly fasting test as part of a check-up is a reasonable baseline. If your numbers are in the prediabetes range, more regular checks, or a sensor for a couple of weeks, give you a clearer picture and a head start.
